Big Finish

Wooh! I made it through the 8 weeks of the Biggest Loser Contest as the winner! I am not going to lie I feel great about it! Not just about winning, but my body just feels great. I lost 32.6lbs in 8 weeks and 13.21% of my starting body weight. It got pretty close at the end, and I am glad I didn't let my guard down and stuck to my diet and workout plan. I want to thank everyone that worked so hard in the contest, it is nice to have some good competition to keep me motivated. Nikki thanks again for organizing this and feeding me such delicious foods and thanks for looking so hot too!

I am now on the first hole in my belt, which is pretty awesome, since it was 5 holes back at the beginning of the contest (I wonder if the are an inch apart? Losing 5inches on my waist is pretty cool). It will be nice to buy some new clothes, since nothing fits me anymore. I like my clothes somewhat baggy, but now some of my favorite clothes are are way to baggy that it looks ridiculous. Honestly, this is one reason I don't like losing weight. I know it might sound silly to some of you, but I would rather not go shopping for clothes and spend money on that stuff, just not my thing. But I plan on doing it this time, since I really want to keep this weight off.

I have never been the greatest long distance runner in the world (I usually like quick sprinting sports and activities) but I set myself a goal at the beginning of the contest of running through all the four neighborhoods in my area without stopping. The neighborhoods are basically four squares (4.5 miles), so it is a nice run for me. Before the contest I only ran around my neighborhood, and that was about it. But after losing a good amount of weight, and running more often I was making pretty good progress in my long distance running. So the day before the final weigh-in, I decided to go for it and actually made it all the way through all the neighborhoods without stopping (probably could have kept going). I was pretty excited, because at the beginning of the contest, I thought this was a pretty tall order for me to do it. I also brought Biscuit with me, since she loves running, and she did awesome too. She never slowed down my pace, like she usually does, so I guess the contest helped her out too.

Well, last night I definitely celebrated. Good beer, nachos, pretzels, brownies, and more good beer! My body didn't know what hit it after being low carb for 8 weeks. I even woke up sweating last night, which was interesting.

I really need to plan where I want to go from here. I actually like my low carb diet and I am so used to it, that I might just stick with it (probably not as strict). It is nice since, I know what I can eat and what I shouldn't. But I really missed cereal in the morning and my Orange Juice! Maybe I will just focus on exercise.. I need to figure this out soon.

Halle the drummer

Two blogs in one day, what's gotten into me?

Anyway, I was in the car taking Halle to daycare today and the song Black Hole Sun from Soundgarden came on the radio. I look in the rearview mirror and noticed Halle with both hands in the air like she was playing drums. For the entire song she did this and even stopped playing the "air drums" when it was just vocals and then continued again when the drums started. Then I remembered this was the same song we were playing on the Wii - Rockband setup at Keith and Keri's house. She must have remembered it from there, since I haven't ever seen her do that before.
That was one time I really wish I had a video camera in my car, because she was ridiculous cute.

Biggest Complainers

What is up with the complaining about the biggest loser competition? I know it isn't everyone, but I don't like that is seems I am just sitting on my ass (losing weight) while everyone else is working very hard.

First off, when I heard you all didn't want guys in the contest. I was really unhappy, because I have needed something to drive me to lose weight, since I have been making excuses for months. I was going to drop out, but I thought that would suck, because I REALLY wanted some challenge in this to force me to work hard.
Since we don't actually know what the difference (or for known fact that there is a difference) between men and women's weight loss, I was willing to give the women a 10% handicap. But then I thought about it and realized.. I didn't really know how much weight I was going to lose, so why was I going to give myself a possible unfair advantage right at the start. I thought the contest was made much fairer after having 20% go to the female biggest loser, even if she won the entire contest. Also, it isn’t just about the money, I really just wanted some motivation and this contest and the contestants are providing that.

Don't think that I just did a low-carb diet and boom all the weight jumped off. If some of you actually think low-carb dieting is a piece of cake (no pun intended), it isn't.

I have changed a lot about many things since starting this contest, (which I am grateful for) but here are the two main ones:
1. Completely changed my diet.
- I haven't had ANY sweets, bread, cereal, carb related meals (that I love)
- The really really hard one to eliminate was beer! I think I have had 4 beers (not the good tasting ones either) in 5 weeks. I used to drink many more then that over the course of a week, probably 4 some nights.
Maybe some of you laugh, but that was a huge change for me and not an easy one, but I was glad to change it up. It is very easy to cheat on this diet, especially when there are plenty of tempting foods around (delicious key-lime pie!). Thank you Nik for providing me such good food to eat to keep my mind off the other stuff I could be eating that is not so low-carb, cause that really helps!
2. I have been working out much more then I have in many years. I have actually used my weight lifting equipment (which makes my wife happy, since it is not just taking up space anymore). Along with playing volleyball as much as I can. I have been able to run 1-3 times a week and I usually bring Biscuit along with me, since she needs some exercise too. I also enjoy pushing Halle in the jogging stroller when I run and she seems to really enjoy it.

I hate hearing people complain that there is no chance for them to win, when they are only a couple pounds away from being in the lead. Yeah, you are working hard.. good! Isn’t that what you want to do? I am not saying put yourself in danger or anything, but you are really putting yourself in great condition. Or people making lame excuses that “oh, there are boys, no chance of me winning. Why try?” LAME! Especially when you knew the guys were in it when you started and decided to gain weight in the first week. Sorry, but there is no excuse for that.

I think this contest is great, and still wide open. 3.5 weeks left. If has definitely challenged me and I am glad that mostly everyone is trying very hard to improve their health and their self image. I feel better than ever, I am losing the weight that was holding me back in sports and putting more pressure on my body (knees especially). This is what I wanted to achieve and I am still going to put forth a good fight to the end and continue on until I am finally satisfied with my fitness level (and I am not 38 on Wii Fit!).

So, thank you contestants for inspiring, challenging, and motivating me in this contest.

Oh, and thank you for actually making me write something on my blog. :)
