What is up with the complaining about the biggest loser competition? I know it isn't everyone, but I don't like that is seems I am just sitting on my ass (losing weight) while everyone else is working very hard.
First off, when I heard you all didn't want guys in the contest. I was really unhappy, because I have needed something to drive me to lose weight, since I have been making excuses for months. I was going to drop out, but I thought that would suck, because I REALLY wanted some challenge in this to force me to work hard.
Since we don't actually know what the difference (or for known fact that there is a difference) between men and women's weight loss, I was willing to give the women a 10% handicap. But then I thought about it and realized.. I didn't really know how much weight I was going to lose, so why was I going to give myself a possible unfair advantage right at the start. I thought the contest was made much fairer after having 20% go to the female biggest loser, even if she won the entire contest. Also, it isn’t just about the money, I really just wanted some motivation and this contest and the contestants are providing that.
Don't think that I just did a low-carb diet and boom all the weight jumped off. If some of you actually think low-carb dieting is a piece of cake (no pun intended), it isn't.
I have changed a lot about many things since starting this contest, (which I am grateful for) but here are the two main ones:
1. Completely changed my diet.
- I haven't had ANY sweets, bread, cereal, carb related meals (that I love)
- The really really hard one to eliminate was beer! I think I have had 4 beers (not the good tasting ones either) in 5 weeks. I used to drink many more then that over the course of a week, probably 4 some nights.
Maybe some of you laugh, but that was a huge change for me and not an easy one, but I was glad to change it up. It is very easy to cheat on this diet, especially when there are plenty of tempting foods around (delicious key-lime pie!). Thank you Nik for providing me such good food to eat to keep my mind off the other stuff I could be eating that is not so low-carb, cause that really helps!
2. I have been working out much more then I have in many years. I have actually used my weight lifting equipment (which makes my wife happy, since it is not just taking up space anymore). Along with playing volleyball as much as I can. I have been able to run 1-3 times a week and I usually bring Biscuit along with me, since she needs some exercise too. I also enjoy pushing Halle in the jogging stroller when I run and she seems to really enjoy it.
I hate hearing people complain that there is no chance for them to win, when they are only a couple pounds away from being in the lead. Yeah, you are working hard.. good! Isn’t that what you want to do? I am not saying put yourself in danger or anything, but you are really putting yourself in great condition. Or people making lame excuses that “oh, there are boys, no chance of me winning. Why try?” LAME! Especially when you knew the guys were in it when you started and decided to gain weight in the first week. Sorry, but there is no excuse for that.
I think this contest is great, and still wide open. 3.5 weeks left. If has definitely challenged me and I am glad that mostly everyone is trying very hard to improve their health and their self image. I feel better than ever, I am losing the weight that was holding me back in sports and putting more pressure on my body (knees especially). This is what I wanted to achieve and I am still going to put forth a good fight to the end and continue on until I am finally satisfied with my fitness level (and I am not 38 on Wii Fit!).
So, thank you contestants for inspiring, challenging, and motivating me in this contest.
Oh, and thank you for actually making me write something on my blog. :)
